Similar bits in both videos, but watch both. Mr Powell was right, maybe a few years out, but right.

Hamr: IOTA 2011

Well this weekend was the annual RSGB IOTA contest.

(For my non amateur radio readers the RSGB is the Radio Society of Great Britain who are the national amateur radio society here. IOTA is Islands on The Air)

I heard more than I could work (isn’t that always the case lol!) but some notable ones I actually worked were: AF-014 (Madeira Archipelago), AS-004 (Cyprus Island), EU-005 (Great Britain), EU-014 (Corsica Island), EU-025 (Sicily Island), EU-045 (Lazio Region group), EU-057 (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State group), EU-129 (Usedom Island AKA Uznam Island), EU-139 (Norrbotten County group), EU-167 (Baixo Alentejo Province group).

Earthquake: English Channel… yes really!

According to BBC News and British Geological Society there was a 3.9 magnitude earthquake that hit at 0700 UTC (0800 local time) on Thursday morning just off Portsmouth.

The following is from the BBC story…

“‘Largest since 1734′

David Kerridge, from the BGS, said it was the biggest incident of its kind in the area for nearly 300 years.

He said: “This is the largest earthquake in this area since a magnitude 4.5 event in 1734.

“Historically, there have been two other significant events nearby – a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in 1878 and a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in 1750.

“In the UK, we experience a earthquake of this magnitude approximately every two years.”

Small earthquakes are not uncommon in the British Isles.”

BUT, I note that the realiable, trusted worldwide source for earthquakes – that is updated every minute of every day – USGS – has NOT shown this quake at all.

A woman who died after falling from her car as she was leaving a Sussex petrol station has been named.

Sheila Moger, 70, from Croydon, was driving along the access road to the Crumbles Retail Park, Pevensey at 1020 BST on Friday when she lost control.

She fell out of the driver’s door of her Renault Modus as she was turning left leaving the Asda petrol station and suffered a serious head injury.

She died at Eastbourne District hospital early on Saturday.

Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses and said they are particularly keen to talk to a blonde woman driving a black car who they believe witnessed the incident but left before police arrived.

If you got a tattoo, what would it be?

(If my parents are reading this, DON’T WORRY I’m not going to!)

I’d get an England flag, a Confederate flag and the NASCAR logo. Maybe something to signify amateur radio too… like a little antenna or something.

England my England…

Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend

Your days are numbered, being brought to an end

To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that’s fine

But don’t say you’re English, that’s way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such

So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch

You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane

But don’t say you’re English ever again.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo

In Brussels it’s scrapped, in Parliament too

Even schools are affected. Staff do as they’re told

They must not teach children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw

The pupils don’t learn about them anymore

How about Agincourt, Hastings, Arnhem or Mons?

When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?

Europe is miles away, over the sea

We’re the English from England, let’s all be proud

Stand up and be counted – Shout it out loud!

Let’s tell our Government and Brussels too

We’re proud of our heritage

Fly the flag of Saint George

Let the world know – WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

160th Anniversary of World’s Fair

World’s Fair

Today’s Google homepage is a lovely picture that if you move your mouse over you can “see” a little closer a fair. Here’s a little about World’s Fair courtesy of Wikipedia…

World’s Fair, World Fair, Universal Exposition, and World Expo (expo short for “exposition”), are names given to various large public exhibitions held in different parts of the world. The first Expo was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, United Kingdom in 1851 under the title “Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations”. “The Great Exhibition”, as it is often called, was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, and was the first international exhibition of manufactured products. As such, it influenced the development of several aspects of society including art and design education, international trade and relations, and even tourism.

Also, it was the precedent for the many international exhibitions, later called “World’s Fairs”, which were subsequently held to the present day. In Acapulco, New Spain (Mexico), annual fairs took place for several centuries where countries from Asia exhibited their products brought to the New World by the Spanish Royal Navy Nao de China.

The main attractions at World’s Fairs are the national pavilions, created by participating countries. At Expo 2000 Hannover, where countries created their own architecture, the average pavilion investment was around €13 million. Given these costs, governments are sometimes skeptical about participation as benefits are often assumed not to outweigh the costs. Tangible effects are difficult to measure; however, an independent study for the Dutch pavilion at Expo 2000 estimated the pavilion (which cost around €35 million) generated around €350 million of potential revenues for the Dutch economy. It also identified several key success factors for world exposition pavilions in general.

Since the entering into force of the 1928 Convention relating to International Exhibitions, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE; English: International Exhibitions Bureau) has served as an international sanctioning body. BIE-approved fairs are divided into a number of types: universal, international or specialized. They usually last between three weeks and six months.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving following a six-car collision in East Sussex in which one driver was seriously hurt.

Sussex Police said the crash happened in Lottbridge Drive, Eastbourne, at midday on Easter Monday.

Six cars, all travelling south, were involved in the collision.

One motorist, a 63-year-old man from Caterham in Surrey, was taken to hospital in a serious condition. The other drivers had minor injuries.

Police said a 31-year-old man from Greenford in west London, who was driving a Honda Accord, was arrested.

A force spokesman said he had been bailed until 18 June while inquiries continued.
